Sitting in the hospital
Oh my, what a crazy last 30 hours of our lives. We are now sitting in the hospital, on Jackies nook (so please excuse typos), trying to recover from this whirlwind of a day. Scarlett is hooke up to IVs, and all sorts of other cords monitoring her breathing, heart rate, temperature ad all sorts of things. I can saywatching your baby suffer is not for the fait of heart, and this day has called on every bit of strength I have. Lets start from the beginning...
Monday night Scarlett didnt sleep very well. She acted fine but wome up several times despite being exhausted. Tuesday she was a little cranky but otherwise eating well and playing fine. I thought it was just an off day from the night before. As we were getiing ready to go to Beths so I could go to work she coughed for the first time. It sounded like a deep cough so I thought a cold was coming on. That night she felt a little warm and the thermometer said 99 so I gave her tylenol before bed. She slept horribly and was more feverishby the morning. I called the doc but thought I should check her temp before I call so when I did it said 103.5. So after a short panic-ing call to my mom, and using cold compresses to cool her I called the Dr. anc they said come in an hour. When we went she was feeling awful, temp was high and they said sounded like bacterial pneumonia and I would need to have chest x-rays done to her. We went straight to Cobleskill hospital for the xrays and they were HORRIBLE! They put her in a tube all stretched out with her arms up and she just screamed and screamed. It was gut wrenching, but little did I know that was only the beginning of what would be the hardest thing to see my baby go through in her so-far short life. We went home to rest and wait for the diagnosis which came at about noon and she did in fact, have bacterial pneumonia. It was in her right lung, upper lobe.
We picked up her perscription and she needed 6mL of Amoxycillian (sp?) which was a LOT for her to swallow. She was gagging and throwing up into her mouth and we were instructed to alternate Tylenol and Motrin every 3 hours. When Nick got home she was still completely out of it. I just sat in the recliner with her in my arms but she was VERY hot, fevers around 103-104 all day. She would wake up screaming and then her eyes would just roll back and she would sleep again. I kept calling the doctor asking if I needed to bring her to the emergency room. The Doctor told me to count her respirations and if they went above 60 per minute to go on in. She was at 55/min so not quite there but very close. Beth and Peter decided to come over and see if they could help, but she was still looking horrible. I called the Dr and said I feel like my daughters health is failing in my arms and I do not know what to do. Alas, we decided to bring her to the emergency room at 9pm in Albany. So driving through the snow storm we finally made it.
The triage took her vitals and moved VERY quickly once they learned her condition. She had a fever of 105.2. She was breathing 75 breaths per minute, meaning it was hard for her to get oxygen. Her heart rate was 2 times faster than normal at 220 bpm. And she hadnt had a wet diaper all day. All the sudden they were moving fast and getting her a room. I heard the word "seizure" about 10 times in 3 minutes and I was sick to my stomach. She needed to be there and they needed to get her fever under control and fluids into her body. They layed her on a table and had one nurse each holding her arms and another holding her legs. They stuck her 3 times trying to get blood drawn and an IV in place. She was so sick and out of it she wasnt even screaming she was just looking at me and humming. When they let go she would reach for me only to have her strapped back down. It was sickening to watch and my heart had never felt so much pain. They finally got her stable and I picked her up and she slept in my arms.
The doctors came in and said she was going to be admitted. She had 2 bags of fluid and a combination of motrin and tylenol every three hours but her temperature still wouldnt come down. We spent that night and the next day in the emergency room because they didnt have any beds for us upstairs. She would mostly sleep and wake up every 20 mintues of so but hardly lift her head, she just wanted me there patting her back and she would go back to sleep. I tried to sleep a little but it was hard with the noise, the nurses constantly coming in, the beeping monitors and my concern for my daughter. She wasnt getting any better. They were giving her meds rectaly to try and get them into her system faster and it still wasnt working.
The next afternoon Beth came back and brought me a couple clothes. Jackie also surprised me and came with some food, books, and her nook. She was a life saver. Even just to have someone there to give a hug to felt great. We moved upstairs into our room and tried to settle in. Nick came to see us after work. Scarlett was mostly sleeping but really not feeling great. It had been 2 days since I had seen her smile or any glimpse into her personality at all.
SO here I sit. In my chair in her room. Watching her sleep, still doing poorly. Praying for her to recover and recover quickly. My poor, poor baby.
